When Do You Need an Infectious Disease Appointment?
Generally, infections are initially diagnosed by primary care physicians or internal medicine specialists . Then, the infectious disease team is consulted when a definite diagnosis cannot be made, if the patient is immunocompromised (for example, in AIDS or after chemotherapy), if the infection is of an uncommon nature, if the disease has not responded to first line antibiotics, or if the disease might be dangerous to other patients, and the patient might have to be isolated. Some commonly treated infectious disease-related cases include HIV, hepatitis B and C, infected foot and leg ulcers, fever of unknown origin (FUO) and osteomyelitis.
