Annual mammograms are the most effective way to diagnose breast cancer early, before any symptoms are present, and with the most treatment options. A mammogram is a low-dose x-ray that examines breast tissue and can help detect breast cancer at an early stage. It is also used to check lumps and help determine which lumps are cancerous and which are benign.  It also shows where the lump is located before you have a biopsy or surgery to remove it.  A mammogram allows the detection of some types of breast cancer 1 to 2 years before it can be felt in a physical exam. 

The day of the exam, be sure your underarms are clean and free of any deodorants, powder, lotions or perfumes.  These products make it difficult to interpret the test results correctly.  It takes just a few minutes for the technologist to take digital images of each breast.  The tech will take 2-3 different views of each breast to examine it entirely.  If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to call us.

The American Cancer Society recommends a mammogram every year if you are 40 or older.  If you detect a lump or change in your breasts during a self exam you should call right away for an appointment.
