Medical Genetics Program - Dr. Samira Ahsan
Dr. Ahsan is a Board Certified Internist, who has recently joined Academic Internal Medicine Faculty Practice. She completed her Internal Medicine training at Wayne State University and her fellowship training in Clinical Genetics at Henry Ford Hospital. During her fellowship she developed a special interest in the genetics of cancer and inherited disorders that begin in adulthood.
She is the founder and director of the Medical Genetics Program at Providence Hospital. This program is designed to provide genetic counseling, risk assessment, and genetic testing (when appropriate) to people with a personal and/or family history of cancer.
Cancer that may have a hereditary basis includes cancers of the breast, ovary, skin, colon, prostate, thyroid, uterus, and others. Two most common hereditary cancer syndromes are:
Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer.
Hereditary Nonpolyposis Colorectal Cancer (HNPCC) also called Lynch Syndrome.
A consultation in the Cancer Genetics Program may be of interest for those who have:

A personal history and/or family history of cancer before the age of 50.
- Several relatives who have been diagnosed with cancer.
- A personal or family history of unusual or rare cancer, such as male breast cancer.
- A personal or family history of individuals who have been diagnosed with more than one cancer.
The goal of the Cancer Genetics Program is to provide information to individuals and their physicians regarding cancer risk, genetic testing options, and comprehensive plan of care regarding future screening. We also review prophylactic medical and surgical options available for the hereditary cancer syndromes.
Dr. Ahsan also sees patients with adult onset inherited disorders, such as Marfan’s syndrome, adult onset polycystic kidney disease, hemochromatosis, and other similar disorders.
