Common Running Injuries - Ankle
1. Ankle sprains. Tearing of ligaments at the ankle. Common cause is stepping in a pothole, or turning the ankle on uneven ground surface. An ankle sprain can range in severity from Grade I (mild) to Grade III (severe). A grade I sprain is a mild tear with no joint instability, generally minimal function is lost. Grade II sprain (Moderate) involves tearing of a ligament, localized swelling, instability and loss of function including limping. Grade III (severe) results in significant instability, swelling, discoloration, inability to weight bear. Symptoms: swelling, pain, discoloration, may not be able to weight bear. Treatment: Ice, compression, elevation, rest, consult physician.
2. Achilles Tendinitis. An inflammation of the Achilles tendon. The Achilles runs from the calf to the heel and provides the power in the push off phase of the gait cycle. Overuse can cause the tendon to become inflamed. Symptoms for acute inflammation of the Achilles tendon are: Pain on the tendon during exercise and early morning, swelling, redness, possibly a creaky feeling to the touch with foot movement, and pain walking up hills. Treatment: Rest, ice, heel pad, anti-inflammatories, orthotics, see your physician.
