1. Stress fractures. Partial cracks in the outer surface of the bone occurring from repetitive stress. Most stress fractures occur in the tibia (shin) and metatarsals (foot). Symptoms: localized pain with activity and/or rest. Pain increases when effected area is touched. Treatment: rest, consult physician to monitor healing process of bone and possible underlying causes of the injury.
2. Plantar fasciitis. An irritation/inflammation of the plantar fascia. The plantar fascia is a thin muscle running the length of the bottom of the foot attaching at the heel. Symptoms: pain at the bottom of the heel with the first step of the morning or after prolonged sitting. Treatment: ice, stretching, massage, possible orthotics, change of shoes, consult physician.
