Common Running Injuries - Shin

Providence Athletic Medicine

runner1.  Shin splints.  An irritation/inflammation of the anterior (front) musculature at the bone attachment.  Usually a result of repetitive overuse. The function of the tibialis anterior (large muscle in front of shin) is to stop the toes from hitting the ground during the swing motion of running.  It also controls the lowering motion of the toes during heel strike.  This muscle works in opposition of the calf muscle; therefore it is sometimes caused by tight calves. Symptoms: pain at the shinbone.  Treatment:  ice massage, stretching calf, possibly change shoes, decrease mileage, consult physician.  If not treated shin splints may lead to stress fractures.

runner2.  Stress fractures.  Partial cracks in the outer surface of the bone occurring from repetitive stress.  Most stress fractures occur in the tibia (shin) and metatarsals (foot).  Symptoms: localized pain with activity and/or rest.  Pain increases when affected area is touched.  Treatment: rest, consult physician to monitor healing process of bone and possible underlying causes of the injury.
